NEXT CA ASSEMBLY SPEAKER TONI ATKINS ENDORSES MARK DESAULNIER FOR CONGRESS

CONCORD, CA— Increasing the sizable coalition of state leaders backing his bid to represent California’s 11th Congressional district, today State Senator Mark DeSaulnier won an endorsement from California’s next Assembly Speaker, Toni Atkins.

In recent weeks, Assembly Democrats voted unanimously to support Assembly member Atkins, who current serves as the Assembly’s Majority Leader, for the top post in the Assembly. She is set to officially take her role sometime this spring, following a floor vote by the full State Assembly.

“There is no candidate in the 11th district that is more prepared to take on the complex legislative body that is our United States Congress than Mark DeSaulnier,” said Assembly Majority Leader Atkins. “His years of experience as a local and state elected leader have given him a deep understanding not only of the issues in the district, but also on several key policy issues that he’ll no doubt expand on at the federal level. I am pleased to give my wholehearted support to Mark’s campaign for Congress.”

“It’s really gratifying to have the support of such a widely respected state leader like Majority Leader Toni Atkins,” said Senator DeSaulnier. “I’m enormously thankful for her support and confidence in my ability to be a strong leader for the residents of California’s 11th Congressional district seat.”

Senator DeSaulnier added, “In Congress, I plan to work hard to end the political warfare so that we can pass meaningful legislation that positively impacts Americans. There are so many key issues at stake, whether it’s passing comprehensive immigration reform, enacting sensible gun safety laws, protecting Social Security and Medicare, promoting economic opportunity and spurring the creation of more good jobs, investing in our schools, and much more.”

Significantly, Senator DeSaulnier has rapidly built up a substantial endorsement list from widely respected elected leaders and influential organizations. Earlier today he scored an endorsement from the Contra Costa Building & Construction Trades Council. To view his full list of endorsements, click here.

Currently, DeSaulnier represents California’s 7th State Senate district, which covers 70% of California’s 11th Congressional district. Previously DeSaulnier served Contra Costa County as a State Assemblyman, County Supervisor, and City Councilman.
